Buy Astrazeneca's generic drug Nexium (esomeprazole) from UK-based Nexium, available for £1.25 per tablet to suit a small group of eligible patients, according to a recent study.
It is the first drug licensed for use by patients in the UK to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, gastroesophageal ulcers and peptic ulcers, including a study in June found.
The trial included patients who had been prescribed Nexium and who had suffered heartburn in the previous 12 months but who were not taking the medication.
Nexium and a similar medication known as Prilosec – which is available generically – are used to treat other conditions such as acid-related ulcers and other stomach ulcers, but have different active ingredients, which could make the trial more difficult to interpret.
However, Astrazeneca is confident that the trial will not affect its branded drug. The UK-based company said the study had been conducted to determine the most appropriate dose and duration for patients. The study also found that the medication can be used safely by up to 50 per cent of those taking the most recent Nexium trial, with the remaining 40 per cent being prescribed a lower dose, the company said.
Nexium is the first drug to treat GERD, a condition where the stomach is sensitive to acid. It was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1996 and the most commonly prescribed branded drug in the US in 2001. The trial had been designed to find the most suitable dose of Nexium to treat patients, but it was also designed to be carried out by AstraZeneca, he said.
The study also looked at the pharmacokinetic properties of Prilosec, a generic version of Prilosec. It is also used to treat acid-related ulcers.
AstraZeneca, the UK-based company, said that Prilosec is a non-steroidal drug that has the same active ingredient as Nexium.
